RIVERSIDE — Police say a gunman shot and killed a Riverside police officer during a foot chase through a city park late Sunday night.
Lt. Leon Phillips says the shooting came after the officer stopped a suspected hit and run driver on Market Street about 10 p.m. The suspect then fled on foot from his vehicle and into nearby Fairmont Park.
Phillips tells The Associated Press that the officer gave chase and both the suspect and the officer exchanged gunshots. The officer was hit by at least one bullet and was rushed to a hospital.
He says the officer “died of his injuries.”
Phillips says police were still out in force well after midnight searching for the gunman but they have “very limited information” other than he is a male in dark clothing.
The officer’s name wasn’t released.
