Yasiel Puig out of Dodgers lineup with strained hamstring

Reporting from San Diego — A day after straining his left hamstring again, Yasiel Puig was out of the Dodgers lineup Saturday for the second game of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres.

Andre Ethier will start in right field in place of Puig.

Manager Don Mattingly claimed to be ignorant of Puig’s condition.

Puig didn’t warm up before the game with his teammates. Mattingly said he was receiving treatment in the trainer’s room at the time.

Asked whether Puig could land on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career, Mattingly said, “I still think it’s a possibility. We just don’t know.”

Mattingly said the team’s medical staff will decide whether to place Puig on the disabled list.

“If it’s the best thing for him, then it’s the best thing,” Mattingly said. “We don’t sit here and fight with medical, like, ‘We’ve got to have him in the lineup tomorrow, we’ve got to have him.’ Obviously, he’s really important to us.”

Puig missed four games in a five-game stretch last week because of soreness in the same hamstring.

“If he’s going to be banged up every third day, four days, if he runs hard and tries to extend, then we’re going to be better off getting him healthy.”
