Bailey, Powers, Kerr help USA capture gold

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Former UC Irvine All-Americans Ryan Bailey and Jeff Powers scored one goal each in the USA Men’s National team’s 9-2 win over host Brazil in the gold-medal game Thursday of the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Ex-Anteater Genai Kerr had six saves in goal.

Tony Azevedo led the U.S. with four goals as the Americans led 5-0 at halftime at Julio Delamare Aquatic Park.

With the victory, the Americans earned an automatic berth in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games at Beijing, China. All three former UCI players competed on the 2004 USA Olympic team.

The U.S. squad compiled a 5-0 record at the 2007 Pan Am Games.
