TRIATHLON TRAINING SET
The Pacific Coast Triathlon committee has three remaining clinics for interested athletes to prepare for the event, which is slated for Sept. 10.
The three remaining clinics are today, Aug. 13 and Aug. 27 from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at Crystal Cove State Beach.
Participants will learn how to quickly enter and exit the ocean and swim comfortably and efficiently in the ocean.
The intstructors are Nan Kappeler and David Light.
The cost is $40 for preregistration and $50 at the clinic.

LOFGREN, U.S. IN FINAL
Newport Beach resident Esther Lofgren helped the U.S. women’s eight win its opening-day heat at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships on Thursday in Hazewinkel, Belgium.
The women’s eight clocked the fastest time in all heats to claim a spot in today’s final.
The United States women’s eight cruised in second place behind Belarus for the first 1,000 meters before turning on the after-burners and winning by six seconds.
The U.S. turned a 0.36-second deficit into a three-second lead in the third quarter of the race.
TARS’ ALUMNI BASKETBALL
The sixth annual Newport Harbor High alumni boys’ basketball tournament is scheduled for Saturday at Newport Harbor.
Check-in is at 8 a.m., and five-on-five, full-court competition begins at 9 a.m.
All Newport Harbor alumni, regardless of whether or not they played basketball for the Sailors, are invited to participate.
Tournament Director Jaime Holmes said players can form their own teams (with players from any class), or merely show up and be placed on a team on tournament day.
The registration fee is $25 and includes a T-shirt. All players are guaranteed at least three games.

CDM ALUMNI TOURNEY
The 18th annual Corona del Mar High alumni boys’ basketball tournament is scheduled Saturday at the school’s two gyms.
All Corona del Mar High graduates are eligible to play in the event, which features pool play in the morning and a single-elimination tournament in the afternoon.
The event begins at 8 a.m. and concludes around 5 p.m.
