BOYS’ UNDER-14

Costa Mesa 1, South Irvine 0: Eddy Saavedra scored a spectacular goal to lift Costa Mesa. Richard Bello, Edgar Rodriguez, Cory Frino, Christian Rodriguez and Gilberto Garcia anchored the passing game, moving the ball up the field to set up at least five other scoring opportunities. Tony Rodriguez, Jovany Castillo, Andrew Guerrero and Sean O’Malley dominated the field.

Costa Mesa 1, North Irvine 0: Tony Rodriguez, Sean O’Malley, Jovany Castillo and Andrew Guerrero anchored the defense, pushing the ball up the field. Eddy Saavedra, Jordan Young, Cory Frino and Richard Bello kept the pressure on the North Irvine defense.

Christian Rodriguez scored the game’s lone goal, firing the ball off the goalie’s fingertips and into the net.

Edgar Vega posted his second shutout of the day.

GIRLS’ UNDER-8

Green Dragons: Julia Ackerman scored twice before moving into goal for the final quarter, making several saves for the Green Dragons in their final game of the spring season.

Destry Comp and Katrina Heil dribbled and passed well, also making stellar saves in the goal. Caylee Talbot and Alexia Hipsher turned back the opposing offense with good stops and passes to Paula Pedrani, Yasmine Gomez and Isabel Jeremias.

Siena Amoroso and Kathryn Arblaster moved up from defense to striker in the final quarter. Amoroso had several good runs at the goal, and Arblaster pursued the ball doggedly, pushing one into the net in the fourth quarter for the third Dragon goal.

BOYS’ UNDER-5

Green Monkeys: The Green Monkeys fought hard against a very strong Costa Mesa team. Dayton Smith and Matthew Mowey played strong defense. Jared Honda and Tanner Casey each scored, with support from Luke Nataupsky.

SPRING SELECT

GIRLS’ UNDER-12

Newport Beach Breakers 4, Corona del Mar 1: Maddi Jabara had a goal and an assist for Newport Beach in an area tournament game. Jabara assisted on the first goal, scored by Peri Howser. Courtney Buck added another goal, assisted by Chelsea Delamater.

After Corona del Mar got on the scoreboard, Dru Cummins scored off an assist by Katherine Maddox in the fourth quarter. Jabara added the insurance goal late in the quarter.

Maddox made key saves in goal for Newport Beach.

Newport Beach Breakers 1, Costa Mesa 0: Peri Howser scored the game’s only goal in the first quarter, off an assist from Taury Hlinka. Alex Steiner and Kelsey Long played tough defense, and Kirsten Rohan and Katherine Maddox combined for the shutout.

The Newport Beach Breakers will face Corona del Mar in the semifinals this weekend.

Newport-Mesa Rippers 52, Anaheim Hills Hawks 42: The Rippers (3-1) had a great team effort in the victory. Cecil Whiteside had 27 points, 13 rebounds and three steals to lead the Rippers. Trevor Davis and Wes Woods added eight points apiece, with Davis adding five assists and Woods chipping in with 10 rebounds.

Michael Borchard, Jackson O’Connor and Angel Beas played great defense, and Luke Christiano, Gabe Gomez and Wes Shaw each contributed.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Seventh-grader Sarah Craig ran a personal best time in winning the 800 meters in a meet against Dwyer middle school, finishing in 2 minutes, 33.4 seconds. Craig also won the 400 meters, running a personal best time of 1:04.1.
