Boys water polo: CdM takes third, fourth place

CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High’s 18-and-under boys water polo

team took third place at the ORCA-Villa Park Tournament while the Sea

Kings’ 16-and-under squad placed fourth in the Trap Tournament at

Saddleback College this past weekend.

CdM’s 18-and-under team defeated SoCal, 13-10, in the third-place game at

Villa Park. A balanced CdM attack from Garrett Bowlus, Chriss Street,

Marcello Pantuliano, Michael March and Artie Dorr, who scored two goals

each, resulted in the third-place victory.

CdM won all three of its game before the semifinals. Highlights for CdM

included a 19-6 blowout of Desert in the second game and a 15-7 victory

over SET in the Sea Kings’ tournament opener. Bobby Messenger scored six

goals for CdM in the Sea Kings’ win over Desert. Bowlus led CdM in its

triumph over SET with five goals.

Bowlus and Dorr led CdM in the tournament with 13 goals each. March had

nine goals total and Pantuliano scored seven times.

CdM platooned goalies Sherwin Kim and Beau Stockstill throughout the

tournament. Kim had 20 saves total, while Stockstill had 14.

CdM’s 16-and-under team won three of four games before its third-place

battle with SoCal. CdM lost to SoCal, 11-9, to finish fourth.

CdM fought through a couple of exciting battles. In the third game, CdM

scored three times in the fourth quarter to beat Trap A, 7-6. Matt Meyer

led CdM with four goals.

In the fourth game, CdM edged Commerce, 12-11. John Mann scored four

times and Jason DiRocco three times for the Sea Kings.

Mann had 19 goals in the tournament, including two six-goal games, to

lead CdM. DiRocco had eight goals total and goalie Tyler Brundage made 51

saves in the tournament.
