San Diego County sheriff’s deputy shoots man in Alpine

A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man in rural Alpine on Wednesday after responding to call about a “mentally disturbed man,” according to the Sheriff’s Department.
The initial call to the Sheriff’s Department came at 4:26 p.m., followed by a report at 5:22 p.m. that there had been an officer-involved shooting.
The man had told people that he wanted to die and was planning to attack a sheriff’s deputy with a screwdriver, homicide investigators said.
In a brief confrontation, the deputy attempted to use a Taser to subdue the man, and when that failed, the deputy fired his gun, investigators said. A screwdriver was found near the body.
The deputy was not injured, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Alpine is located 40 miles east of downtown San Diego.
