Mexrrissey rocks the Regent in downtown Los Angeles
The band didn’t start playing until close to 10 p.m. That didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd, which was ready to sing along in Spanish and English.
(Carolina A. Miranda / Los Angeles Times)The project band Mexrrissey has taken Morrissey’s most venerable songs and reproduced them in Spanish with Latin beats. The band played the final show of its tour at the Regent in downtown Los Angeles on Monday night.
Mexrrissey got the crowd hopping at the Regent on Monday night with their Latin-ized covers of Morrissey tunes — such as “Girlfriend in a Coma,” which was lovingly referred to as “Girlfriend in a Conga.” Left to right: Adan Jodorowsky, known as Adanowsky, Jay de la Cueva, and singer-songwriter Ceci Bastida.

Mexrrissey consists of a shifting lineup of musicians from both sides of the border. At center: Adanowsky on the guitar. The son of filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, he is known for his New Wave-infused sounds and wild music videos.

Mexrrissey’s sound was layered and complex: the group fused Latin beats — from samba to cha cha cha — with pop, rock, jazz, electric blues guitar and, of course, moody New Wave. Adanowsky is at left, with Ceci Bastida center and guitarist Jay de la Cueva.

The Chipster-ish crowd was decked out in an array of excellent tees — such as this one, worn by the dude standing behind us, which riffs on the idea of a carpool.
