Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon to play lovers in ‘Frankie and Johnny’ Broadway revival

Audra McDonald, the six-time Tony Award-winning actress, will return to Broadway alongside Oscar-nominated Michael Shannon in a romantic drama beginning in May.
Announced on Wednesday, McDonald and Shannon will star in a new production of “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune,” a Terrence McNally romance first produced off-Broadway in 1987.
The play follows the love affair between a waitress (McDonald) and a cook (Shannon), who find comfort in each other from their lonely lives.
Obie Award winner Arin Arbus will make her Broadway debut as director, and Hunter Arnold, Debbie Bisno and Tom Kirdahy are on board as producers.
The production, opening at a Shubert theater not yet announced, will run for 16 weeks starting in May.
The 1987 production starred Kathy Bates and F. Murray Abraham, and its subsequent revival in 2002, which starred Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci, was well received on Broadway.
A 1991 film adaptation directed by Garry Marshall starred Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino.
The creative team credits behind the upcoming production also include sound by Nevin Steinberg, lighting by Natasha Katz, set design by Riccardo Hernandez and costumes by Emily Rebholz.
