Friday’s top Southern California high school football games

No. 9 Los Angeles Crenshaw (7-2, 4-0) vs. No. 14 L.A. Dorsey (9-0, 4-0) at Jackie Robinson Stadium, 7 p.m. — The top seeding for the City Section Division I playoffs will be on the line in this Coliseum League showdown between archrivals. After getting blown out twice by Crenshaw last season, Dorsey appears to possess the offensive firepower to give the Cougars a stiffer test. Quarterback Joseph Gray has passed for 28 touchdowns and the Dons have outscored league opponents by an average of 36 points. Crenshaw has won its league games by an average of 53 points. During a 42-0 rout of Locke last week, Cougars tailback De’Anthony Thomas returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown, ran for a 41-yard touchdown and completed a pair of passes. The pick: Crenshaw.

No. 8 La Puente Bishop Amat (9-0, 3-0) at No. 5 Mission Hills Alemany (9-0, 3-0), 7 p.m. — Alemany has won its first three Serra League games easily, but the Warriors must beat defending league champion Bishop Amat to secure the league’s top spot in the Pac-5 Division playoffs. The Lancers, coming off a bye week, cruised to a 52-7 triumph over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in their last game. Converted receiver Rio Ruiz completed 20 consecutive passes against the Knights on the way to a 346-yard, five-touchdown performance. The pick: Alemany.

No. 22 San Clemente (7-2, 2-1) at No. 17 Rancho Santa Margarita Tesoro (7-2, 2-1), 7 p.m. — Both teams are hoping to avoid late-season letdowns after dejecting losses to top-ranked Mission Viejo. San Clemente hung tough against the Diablos during a 38-24 loss in which the Tritons faded in the second half. Mission Viejo pounded Tesoro, 30-7, last week. Tesoro quarterback Matt Adam, who completed only eight of 22 passes in that game, must display better accuracy for the Titans to avoid a third-place league finish. The pick: San Clemente.

No. 18 Santa Margarita (7-2, 3-1) vs. No. 25 Santa Ana Mater Dei (6-3, 3-1) at Saddleback College, 7:30 p.m. — The adjustments made on the sidelines may be as intriguing as the play on the field in the battle between veteran coaches Harry Welch and Bruce Rollinson. “He has a special throne in the pantheon of coaches,” Santa Margarita’s Welch said of his Mater Dei counterpart, who has guided the Monarchs to five Southern Section Division I titles and two mythical national championships. Welch, in his first season with the Eagles, is the only coach to lead two schools — Canyon Country Canyon and San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s — to California Interscholastic Federation state bowl championships.
