A Record Seven Homers for Mets in 16-4 Victory

Jose Reyes saw the ball shoot toward left field and thought for sure he had a double as he put his head down and sprinted around first base. By the time Reyes passed second base, he slowed down to a trot.
Welcome to Philadelphia’s homer-friendly park.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen with the ball,” Reyes said. “Then I saw home run.”
Turned out few Mets had to run very hard, and a brief losing streak was going, going, gone in record fashion.
David Wright hit a grand slam, Reyes and Victor Diaz each homered twice and the New York Mets hit a team-record seven homers Tuesday night in a 16-4 rout of Philadelphia.
Mike Piazza and Doug Mientkiewicz also homered, and Wright and Diaz each went two for four with four runs batted in for the Mets, who stopped a two-game skid. The seven homers were only five shy of New York’s season total coming in.
“We got some balls up in the air and drove it pretty good,” Manager Willie Randolph said.
San Diego 5, San Francisco 2 -- Brian Lawrence (1-2) threw eight strong innings and Geoff Blum and Ramon Hernandez each drove in two runs for the host Padres.
Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his second save in three chances.
Florida 6, Washington 3 -- Brian Moehler (1-0) earned his first major league victory in 2 1/2 years and Carlos Delgado hit the Marlins’ first homer in six games.
In sweeping a two-game set at Washington’s RFK Stadium, the Marlins joined the Nationals atop the National League East at 8-6.
St. Louis 7, Pittsburgh 1 -- Matt Morris (1-0) breezed in his first start since off-season shoulder surgery, limiting the Pirates to one run and four hits in six innings at Pittsburgh.
Colorado 8, Arizona 1 -- Jeff Francis (1-0) pitched into the eighth inning and Matt Holliday went four for four and drove in three runs at Denver. Shawn Estes (1-1) gave up three runs, six hits and six walks in the loss.
Houston 5, Atlanta 3 -- Willy Taveras hit his first major league home run and Adam Everett and Jeff Bagwell had run-scoring doubles during a three-run fifth to back Brandon Backe (1-0) at Houston.
Chicago 7, Cincinnati 1 -- Corey Patterson, Michael Barrett and Derrek Lee hit solo homers at Cincinnati in support of Mark Prior (2-0).
