3 Students Killed in House Fire Near Campus

Three students were killed in an early morning fire that gutted a house near Miami University, authorities said.
Julia Turnbull, 21, of Milford, Ohio, and Kathryn Welling, 21, of Bronxville, N.Y., died of carbon monoxide poisoning, said Butler County Coroner Richard Burkhardt. The cause of death was not known for Stephen Smith, 22, of Bethesda, Md., one of nine students renting the home in Oxford, northwest of Cincinnati.
Investigators said they believed the fire was accidental and might have started in a downstairs recreation room.
