The State : Hike in Bridge Fare Scuttled
Golden Gate Bridge officials have abandoned an unpopular proposal to charge $5 for single-occupant vehicles during rush hours, but the toll will probably be boosted in the next few months. It currently costs $1 to cross the bridge, except on Fridays and Saturdays, when the toll is $2. During non-rush hours, motorists would pay $2, seven days a week. A proposal made two weeks ago to charge $5 was withdrawn by transportation officials in the wake of widespread criticism.
