College Roundup : Fullerton Women Defeat SDSU on Late Free Throws

Sheryl Jones made two free throws with 24 seconds remaining to help Cal State Fullerton defeat San Diego State, 55-53, Thursday in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s basketball game at Fullerton.
Jones’ free throws put Fullerton ahead, 54-53. Wendy Anae added another free throw for Fullerton with 20 seconds left.
Felicia Benson scored 13 points and Anae had 11 for Fullerton (15-10, 10-6).
In another PCAA game:
UC Irvine 97, San Jose State 57--Cheryl Eiland scored 14 points on 6 of 7 shooting for host Irvine (11-12, 9-6), which has won 8 of its last 11 games.
In a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game:
Cal State Northridge 68, Chapman 66--Marianne Dixon made a 15-foot shot with 46 seconds left for visiting Cal State Northridge. Chapman led, 37-34, at the half, thanks to a 23-for-28 first-half performance from the free throw line.
Kathleen Dixon led Cal State Northridge with 23 points. Karan Polk, and Dana Dawson scored 19 each for Chapman (5-6, 14-10).
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Biola 92, Southern California 59--Julie Amon scored 16 and Gail Brown 12 for host SCC (10-17).
In nonconference women’s tennis:
Pepperdine 6, UC Irvine 3--Stacey Cadigan and Karin Bering won in singles for host Irvine (8-4). Pepperdine is 8-2.
In the Chico State softball tournament:
Chapman 13, Sonoma State 0--Karen Zupan hit a grand slam in the second inning for Chapman (8-4), which beat St. Mary’s, 4-2, earlier Thursday.
