Lebanon’s main Shia Muslim militia warned of a plot to kidnap more foreigners working for international organizations in southern Lebanon. “We have definite security information that a squad of 25 people specialized in kidnaping, backed by cars and weapons, has been sent to the south to kidnap more foreigners,” said Daoud Daoud, the chief military official for the Amal militia in the city of Tyre. Addressing a meeting of 40 Muslim clergymen, Daoud said the squad’s targets are foreigners working for the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon, the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees and the International Committee of the Red Cross. He did not give further details of the plot.
