Smirking

The Times published an article about Reuters’ differences with The New England Journal of Medicine’s editor Dr. Arnold Relman (Metro, Feb. 13). The article included the following passage: “He told me to go and stand in a corner because I’m a bad boy,” smirked Desmond Maberley, executive editor of Reuters North America.
I may be guilty of making the occasional casual or lighthearted remark that somehow, as in this case, makes its way into print, but as for smirking? Never. Or at least not since I was 6 years old and my older and much bigger brother caught me watching him try to kiss a girl for the first time.
How anybody can interview me by phone from about 2,500 miles away and describe my facial expression is beyond me. I would suggest that you immediately create a No-Smirking zone in your newsroom and banish all such liberty-takers to it.
