St. Mary’s 47, La Quinta 46--The Belles, with an enthusiastic home crowd behind them, upset top-seeded La Quinta in the second round of the CIF 2-A playoffs at St. Mary’s in Inglewood.
“We just had too many turnovers,” said La Quinta Coach Kevin Kiernan. “They played a really aggressive and tight zone.”
Senior guard Tammy Booker scored a game-high 16 points for St. Mary’s, which advanced past the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1981.
But it was senior guard Monique Silva’s close-range shot that won the game with 54 seconds left, giving the Belles a 47-44 lead. Silva finished with eight points, while center Erin Banks and forward Shunda Thompson each added seven.
St. Mary’s improved to 17-9, while La Quinta ended the season with a 21-5 mark.
