Jury deliberations in the murder trial of former California Highway Patrol Officer Craig Peyer continued at a slow pace Wednesday, as jurors went home after deliberating for the sixth day without reaching a verdict.
Superior Court Judge Richard D. Huffman ordered the jurors to return today at 8:30 a.m. to continue their deliberations. Peyer, 37, is charged with strangling Cara Knott, 20, on Dec. 27, 1986.
After a monthlong trial, the jury is deliberating over whether Peyer should be convicted of first- or second-degree murder in the slaying, or found innocent.
Police said that Knott’s body was thrown off the Old U.S. 395 bridge into a dry creek bed near the Mercy Road off-ramp and Interstate 15.
Peyer, a 13-year CHP veteran, was fired in May. He is free on $1 million bail.
