Local News in Brief : Fullerton : Cal State Center Set Up to Aid Foreign Students

Cal State Fullerton has formed a new service, called the Intercultural Development Center, to help foreign-born students, including the university’s large Vietnamese community.
The center was created following a survey last year by the university’s International Education and Exchange Office that found many pressures on Vietnamese-born students but few campus resources available to them.
The survey was headed by Robert B. Ericksen, director, and Dogan M. Cuceloglu, assistant director of the International Education and Exchange Office.
Ericksen recently praised the opening of the new Intercultural Development Center (IDC), saying it would help Vietnamese and other foreign-born students in gaining English proficiency, and by providing employment-skill workshops and cultural-adjustment courses.
“The IDC celebrates the remarkable cultural diversity of Cal State Fullerton,” Ericksen said. “Its establishment also recognizes the special responsibilities we have to learn from one another and to communicate effectively.”
Nghia V. Duong, a 1983 Cal State Fullerton sociology graduate, is coordinator for the center.
