Judges Directs EPA to Ban Use, Sale of Chlordane Products

WASHINGTON — A federal judge today ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to ban the use and sale of products containing the anti-termite pesticide chlordane, which scientists believe causes cancer.
In a brief order made public today, U.S. District Judge Louis Oberdorfer said the EPA’s decision to allow continued sale of existing stocks of products containing chlordane and hepachlor violated the Federal Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, known for short as FIFRA. The judge gave EPA until April 15 to impose the ban.
Oberdorfer made the ruling in a lawsuit by the National Coalition Against the Misuse of Pesticides. His order directs EPA to ban the sale of any products containing chlordane by the 197 companies that have federal pesticide licenses to sell the chemical.
