U.S. Halts Costa Rica Police Aid

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — The United States has suspended financial assistance to the Costa Rican police force for 1988, National Security Minister Hernan Garron said today without elaborating.
Official sources, who asked not to be identified, said the assistance was cut off because of President Oscar Arias Sanchez’s opposition to a request by the Reagan Administration for $36.25 million to aid Nicaraguan rebels. Congress rejected the aid package Feb. 3. Last year, Costa Rica received $1.5 million in aid for its police.
