San Diego’s Finest City Freedom Band is trotting out the red carpet as well as hosts of a national gathering of lesbian and gay bands this weekend. According to the Freedom Band’s president, Jane Ballinger, some 130 musicians from 14 bands will perform together in a gala concert Saturday evening at the Lyceum Theatre downtown.
In addition to eight guest conductors who will play musical chairs on the podium, a corps of 20 twirlers will complement the band’s programming. The Lesbian and Gay Bands of America coalition has been meeting twice a year for the last six years. Their fall 1987 event coincided with the Oct. 10 March on Washington, where delegates performed for 4,000 people at Constitution Hall.
