Jurors in Orlando, Fla., have recommended that a man whose death sentence was overturned should be resentenced to die, in spite of character witness testimony by eight other Death Row inmates who described him as generous and caring. James Ernest Hitchcock, 31, was convicted and sentenced to death in 1977 for the rape-murder of his 13-year-old stepniece. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned his sentence last April. After a three-day resentencing trial, jurors voted 7 to 5 to recommend that Hitchcock be executed. Circuit Judge Gary Formet Sr. is to announce his sentence Wednesday.
