After pushing himself all over campus in a wheelchair on Monday, John R. Buzan, student body president at Golden West College, said he had a greater awareness of the problems of handicapped students.
Buzan, 25, of Huntington Beach, the president of Associated Students of Golden West College, is not handicapped. But he put himself in the wheelchair to see whether there are places on campus difficult for handicapped students to use or to reach. He said he encountered several such situations.
“Things should be accessible to the handicapped, and I found places and situations where they aren’t accessible on campus,” Buzan said. “It definitely gave me a greater awareness of the problems.”
Buzan said the next step is for student government to bring the message home to teachers and college administrators. The college will have a “Disability Awareness Day” on May 4, Buzan said.
