The Newport Beach Public Library has received a $145,000 grant from the Harry and Grace Steele Foundation that will go toward additions to the library’s reference, book and recording collections, library officials announced.
City Librarian Ladonna T. Kienitz said about $95,000 of the grant would be used to provide a more extensive reference collection at the library’s main Newport Center Branch. Another $50,000 would be used to add to, and improve, the library’s book and record collections.
Library officials said demands for reference materials had doubled in the past decade, and that than one-third of the requests for books and recordings go unfilled.
The Steele grant is the first major grant received by the library, Kienitz said.
