NRC Orders 3M Co. to Recall Ionizers Because of Radiation

MINNEAPOLIS — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ordered an immediate recall of 3M Co. static air ionizers after finding a greater problem with radiation leakage than previously was known.
The commission in Washington told the company last week to retrieve 41,000 of the devices, which have various commercial uses, including the purification of foods and drugs. The company was given 60 days to demonstrate to the agency why its license to manufacture the ionizers should not be revoked.
After first reports of radiation leakage, 3M initiated the recall of 1,500 of the devices.
