Cleveland 56, Fairfax 52--Cleveland overcame a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter and rallied against visiting Fairfax in the 4-A game.
The Cavaliers fell behind, 43-36, after converting only 4 of 11 shots from the free-throw line in the third quarter. Cleveland outscored Fairfax, 20-9, and made 8 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Senior center Dawn Stewart scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers (9-6). Junior forward Nancy Nicholls added 13 points and had a game-high 16 rebounds for Cleveland.
Reseda 70, Bell 40--Despite the easy win at home in the 3-A game, Reseda Coach Andrea Francola was not pleased with her team’s performance.
“We’re a running team and we ran a lot tonight and were strong on the boards,” Francola said. “But we played far from a flawless game. We made a lot of mental mistakes and made a lot of turnovers.”
Reseda’s Jennifer Marzahl came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points and teammate Frida Kalajian added 13.
“Jennifer had a strong game and she’ll be seeing a lot more playing time,” Francola said.
North Hollywood 76, Huntington Park 53--The Huskies capitalized on the height advantage of center Sandrine Rocher (5-10) and forward Nikki O’Neal (5-9) to advance in the 3-A Division with a first-round win at home.
Rocher, a senior, scored 23 points and grabbed a season-high 22 rebounds. O’Neal, a junior, scored 18 points and had 14 rebounds.
“They were quicker than us, but we were bigger than them,” North Hollywood Coach Rich Allen said.
North Hollywood led, 36-29, at halftime and launched a 40-point second-half to put the game away. Michelle Cabaldon added 12 points for the Huskies.
Dorsey 49, El Camino Real 45--The Conquistadores were 4 of 20 from the free-throw line in the 4-A game at home. El Camino Real trailed by 14 entering the fourth quarter, but a late rally led by Kerrie Marshall, who had 20 points, fell short.
