College Roundup : Stanford Gymnasts Defeat Fullerton

Dina Amoroso won the beam event and captured the overall title to lead Stanford to a Far West Regional victory over Cal State Fullerton in a dual meet Friday at Stanford.
Stanford won with 185.10 points, and Fullerton scored 184.85.
Amoroso, from Anaheim, won the beam with a 9.70 and took the overall title with a combined score of 38.25.
Fullerton’s Margot Gumerlock was third overall with a 36.70. Gumerlock won the vault with a 9.55.
In men’s basketball:
Pacific Christian 96, American Indian Bible 66--Steve Welch scored 16 points for Pacific Christian in one semifinal of the Western Christian Athletic Assn. Western Regionals at Phoenix. PCC (28-5) plays Arizona College of the Bible tonight in the final. Burton Lalk added 14 and Doug Wood 13 for PCC.
In nonconference baseball:
Cal State Dominguez 5, UC Irvine 0--Winning pitcher Joe Cortez (1-1) threw a complete game, allowing 7 hits and striking out 4. Dominguez Hills’ Chris Haslock hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Irvine (6-7) was led by Gordon Staab, who went 3 for 4.
La Verne 11, Chapman 4--Tony Aguirre drove in five runs with a pair of doubles, and Ron Hubel had two hits, including a solo home run, to lead La Verne at Orange. Scott Root struck out eight in seven innings of relief to earn the victory. Tony Gardea went 2 for 3 with a double for Chapman (6-6-1).
In nonconference men’s tennis:
UC Santa Barbara 7, Chapman 2--Paul Charlesworth and Barry Hancock picked up the only two victories for Chapman at Santa Barbara. Charlesworth won, 6-1 6-3, over Steve Leier and Hancock defeated Brian Corey, 6-2, 6-3.
USC 5, UC Irvine 2--USC won 4 of 6 singles matches to advance in the second round of the National Indoor Collegiate Invitational team championships at Louisville, Ky. Richard Lubner defeated Byron Black, 6-3, 6-4, and Shige Kanroja defeated Murphy Jensen, 6-4, 6-4, for Irvine’s two points. Once a team wins five points, the match ends. Irvine (4-2) plays Tennessee today at 4 p.m.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
UC Irvine 6, Nevada Las Vegas 3--Kathy Rose of UC Irvine defeated Cindy Pineda, 6-1, 6-1, for Irvine, which won in the first match of the round-robin tournament. Stacy Cadigan and Karin Bering also won in singles for Irvine (7-1), which swept the three doubles matches.
