Tracy Boatman scored on a header from five yards to lift Corona del Mar High School to a 2-1 overtime victory over Marina Friday in a girls’ Southern Section 4-A first-round soccer game at Corona del Mar.
The victory sends the Sea Kings (13-5-5) into a second-round match Wednesday against Mission Viejo, the top-seeded team. Marina finished at 7-6-7.
Boatman, a junior forward, headed the ball off an assist from freshman sweeper Prentice Perkins, who dribbled in from 30 yards. The winning goal was scored after nine consecutive shots by Corona del Mar.
Senior midfielder Kathryn Kolstad scored Corona del Mar’s first goal 35 minutes into the game, with an assist from Perkins. Perkins dribbled in from the left corner and passed to Kolstad for a high kick into the upper right corner.
“I’ve been dreaming of that goal for a long time,” said Kolstad, the team captain.
Marina came back in the second half and shot twice before scoring at the 51-minute mark. Marina forward Monica Marrero sprinted down the left side and scored from a wide-open position 10 yards out.
Though Corona del Mar shot six times in the final minutes of regulation, it could not capitalize and the game was sent into overtime. Corona del Mar outshot Marina, 17-8, for the game.
“They’re a good ball team, but I think our depth and conditioning were the keys for us in the end,” said Sea King Coach John Nyguen. “It was a great win for us.”
