CBS News’ original anchorman, Douglas Edwards, is calling it quits after 46 years, CBS announced Thursday. Edwards, 70, a contemporary of Edward R. Murrow and the original anchor of CBS’ first network television newscast, is retiring April 1. After several years in radio, Edwards was tapped in 1948 by then-CBS News President Frank Stanton to anchor the nation’s first nightly TV news broadcast, “CBS-TV News.” Edwards was succeeded as anchor in 1962 by Walter Cronkite.
