Defending champion Zina Garrison combined a sharp serve with superior speed Wednesday night and breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Wendy White to reach the quarterfinals of the $250,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Oakland.
Argentina’s Gabriela Sabatini, seeded second, advanced by beating Czechoslovakia’s Jana Novotna, 6-4, 6-3.
In earlier matches, Robin White upset fifth-seeded Sylvia Hanika, 6-1, 6-4, and the Soviet Union’s Larisa Savchenko ousted seventh-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden opened defense of his Volvo Tennis-U.S. Indoor championship with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over West Germany’s Damir Keretic at Memphis.
Top-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany advanced to the third round of the $500,000 Nabisco Grand Prix tournament at Milan, Italy, by defeating Sweden’s Magnus Gustafsson, 6-3, 6-3.
Second-seeded Jimmy Connors and fifth-seeded Yannick Noah of France won their first-round matches. Connors defeated New Zealand’s Davis Lewis, 6-3, 6-3, and Noah ousted Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 7-6.
