Police are investigating the possibility that the Wednesday afternoon slaying of a man in Southeast San Diego was related to drugs or gang activity.
The victim, whose identity was withheld pending notification of relatives, was declared dead at Mercy Hospital at 5:23 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.
The incident occurred shortly before 4:23 p.m. in an alley behind an apartment building on 51st Street, police said. The victim was in the alley with several other men, one of whom fired a gun at him several times, hitting him at least once in the chest.
Police said the victim ran to the front of the building, where he collapsed.
Police were seeking the assailant, who fled with the other men in an older-model Cadillac.
