Local News in Brief : Deputy Pleads Guilty
- Share via
A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy pleaded guilty Wednesday to embezzling funds by claiming more than $59,000 in overtime pay for 1,256 hours he did not work.
Willard Burney, 41, a five-year member of the department who worked in the County Jail, was also charged last November with falsifying government records. Prosecutors agreed to drop that count in exchange for his plea, Deputy Dist. Atty. Lawrence E. Mason said.
Mason said Burney, who was suspended after the case was filed, faces a maximum four-year prison term when he is sentenced April 15.
