Local News in Brief : Fountain Valley : Ballot Backers Plan Forum on Southpark

Backers of a ballot measure to decide whether an industrial development known as Southpark should be allowed in the southeast corner of the city will sponsor a public forum on the issue Thursday.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Fountain Valley Recreation Center of Mile Square Regional Park, near the Brookhurst Street-Heil Avenue entrance. A panel of speakers will be available at the forum to answer questions.

Measure A will be on the ballot in a Feb. 23 city election that was called by the City Council after a successful referendum drive by homeowners opposed to the 140-acre project. The group, Citizens for Fountain Valley, contends that traffic and environmental concerns were inadequately considered before project approval.

A Price Club store had been planned for Southpark, a project Fountain Valley officials estimated would generate millions of dollars for city improvements that otherwise could not be afforded. But after opponents collected enough signatures to qualify their referendum for the ballot, the Price Club chain withdrew from the project. Some City Council members hope to woo the firm back.
