Dave Shermet drove in four runs and Kevin Long three to lead Arizona to a 14-9 victory over Cal State Fullerton Thursday in a nonconference baseball game at Tucson.
Fullerton (4-5) held a 6-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth, but Arizona scored six runs off three Titan pitchers to take an 8-6 lead.
Greg Mannion, who had three hits, hit a solo home run in the eighth to pull Fullerton within 8-7. But Arizona (9-2) scored six more runs in the bottom of the inning.
In other nonconference baseball:
UC Riverside 11, Southern California College 6--Southern California rallied with five runs in the seventh to tie the score, 6-6, but host UC Riverside scored five in the bottom of the inning. Loren Brooks (0-3) took the loss for Southern California (1-5).
In women’s nonconference tennis:
UC Irvine 6, Long Beach 3--Irvine (5-1) won four singles and two doubles matches at Long Beach. Courtney Weichsel, Irvine’s No. 1 player, defeated Rolanda Simon, 7-5, 6-2.
Cal State Fullerton 9, Whittier 0--Nicole Brechtbuhl, Fullerton’s No. 1 singles player, defeated Jennifer Lindholm, 6-0, 6-2, to lead visiting Fullerton (3-2).
In the San Diego Intercollegiate Tournament:
Miles Walker and Olivier Amerlinck of Chapman won two matches each in No. 1 and 2 singles play at the University of San Diego Thursday. Walker defeated Dave Smith of Pepperdine, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, and Yoram Baron of U.S. International, 6-4, 6-1. Amerlinck beat No. 2-seeded Jean LeCler of Fresno State, 6-2, 7-5, and fifth-seeded Pat Crow of Long Beach, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Both players advanced to today’s quarterfinals.
