Charles Barkley put on another one-man show Thursday night to provide Jim Lynam with his first victory as coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.
Barkley scored 46 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked 4 shots as the 76ers beat the Milwaukee Bucks, 119-113, in overtime at Philadelphia. He made 15 of 27 field-goal attempts and hit 16 of 20 foul shots.
“I’m totally exhausted,” said Barkley, who played all but three minutes. “I was hoping it wouldn’t go into overtime. It was a very physical game.”
With Philadelphia trailing, 106-104, and 26 seconds left in regulation, Barkley made two free throws to send the game into overtime.
A layup by Gerald Henderson gave the 76ers a 114-112 lead in overtime, and Milwaukee never caught up. Barkley scored Philadelphia’s final five points on three free throws and a dunk.
Lynam, a former Clipper coach who became the 76er coach Sunday after Matt Guokas was fired, said his first victory was “just another win.”
Indiana 108, Golden State 107--Steve Stipanovich made a disputed three-point shot at the buzzer to enable the Pacers to edge the Warriors at Oakland.
The winning shot from the left corner was the first three-pointer of the season by Stipanovich, a 7-foot center. The Warriors protested, claiming the shot came from inside the three-point line, but the officials disagreed.
Golden State blew an 18-point lead in the second half, but rebounded to take a 107-103 lead with 44 seconds left.
A jumper by Scott Skiles cut the lead to 107-105 with 35 seconds left, and the Pacers got the ball back after Ralph Sampson missed a shot with six seconds left.
Skiles brought the ball up and threw a bad pass to Stipanovich, who saved the ball from going out of bounds and fired up a wild shot that hit the rim and bounced back to him. The Pacer center then put up the winning shot.
Sacramento 123, Portland 113--Otis Thorpe scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Kings beat the Trail Blazers at Sacramento. Clyde Drexler scored a game-high 28 for Portland.
Seattle 120, Houston 115--Tom Chambers scored 16 of his game-high 36 points in the fourth quarter as the SuperSonics defeated the Rockets at Seattle.
Dale Ellis added 35 points for Seattle, which snapped a five-game losing streak and ended the Rockets’ four-game winning string. Akeem Olajuwon scored 29 points for the Rockets.
