Two men robbed a U.S. Federal Credit Union at the Long Beach Naval Station Thursday, spraying mace at an armored truck guard and making off with an undisclosed amount of money. “It appears to have been very well planned,” said Lt. John Anderson, a Navy public affairs officer.
The robbery occurred at 11:20 a.m. after the two men, dressed in jeans and posing as customers, overpowered a guard engaged in a delivery, then took away his gun and the money he was carrying, Anderson said. The credit union is located on an unsecured part of the base accessible through an unguarded gate that is open during the day, he said.
Anderson said the two robbers escaped in a car driven by an accomplice. It was not known whether they were civilians or military personnel, he said.
Fred Reagan, a spokesman for the FBI, which is investigating the case, would not say how much money was taken, except that it was “substantial.”
