Hyundai Plans Parts Distribution and Training Plant in Illinois

AURORA, Ill. — Hyundai Motor America has announced plans to build a $15.7-million auto parts distribution and training facility in Aurora, making it the third major Asian auto maker to move to the Chicago suburb.

Already in Aurora, adjacent to the Hyundai property, is Nissan Motor Corp.’s distribution center. And Toyota Motor Corp. is to break ground in Aurora next year for a Midwest headquarters and distribution facility.

“The ability to move products east and west on Interstate 88 and 294, plus the excellent north-south truck routes which connect Interstate 80, is a major factor in location,” Barbara Katermann, executive director of the Aurora Development Commission, said Wednesday after Hyundai’s announcement.

Hyundai entered the U.S. market in February, 1986, and has risen to fourth place among auto importers. Its Excel was the best-selling auto import in the United States last year.

Hyundai’s Midwestern dealers now receive parts from New Jersey, Georgia and California. Officials say the Aurora center would serve 14 states.
