Commerce : Incumbent Steps Down

Incumbents Robert J. Cornejo and Arturo Marquez are up against three other candidates vying for three Commerce City Council seats in the April 12 election. Cornejo, 53, an account executive with a trucking firm, was first elected to the council in 1984, the same year Marquez, 24, was appointed to his seat. Marquez is a recent college graduate.
Councilman Michael V. Guerra, 75, has decided not to seek reelection. Guerra was first elected to the council in 1972.
The other candidates are Art Navarro, 37, a teacher; Ruben C. Batres, 55, a furniture company supervisor, and Manuel L. Jimenez, retired director of public works for Commerce.
Commerce councilmen receive a monthly stipend of $412.
Commerce voters also will decide two ballot measures. One would impose an 8% bed tax to fund public works projects, and the other is an advisory measure to support national health insurance.
