Dole Wins All Kansas Delegates

TOPEKA, Kan. — Sen. Bob Dole swept the Republican caucuses in Kansas on Saturday, giving him all 34 of the delegates his home state will send to the national convention.
As expected, Dole overwhelmed a challenge by rival GOP presidential candidate Pat Robertson to win caucuses in the state’s two largest counties, giving the Senate minority leader complete control of the process to pick national convention delegates from Kansas.
In Sedgwick County, which includes the city of Wichita, 2,140 Dole supporters voted, contrasted with 807 for Robertson and 783 voting for an uncommitted delegate slate. In Johnson County in suburban Kansas City, Dole’s winning margin was about 2 to 1.
Dole supporters in the state Republican Party said they hoped the senator’s strength in his home-state presidential caucuses would help him in Iowa’s caucuses on Monday.
“Momentum has a lot to do with it,” said Chris Beal, the state GOP’s political director. “It’s the name of the game, the way the presidential selection process is geared.”
