Pakistani authorities imposed a curfew and deployed troops over a wide area of Karachi in an attempt to quell ethnic violence that has left 14 people dead and more than 150 injured in the past several days. Witnesses said mobs of youths set fires in several districts of the city and attacked a police station, forcing officers to open fire. The fighting involves Pushtuns, settlers from Pakistan’s tribal northwest frontier province bordering Iran and Afghanistan, and Mohajirs, who migrated from India to Pakistan during the 1947 partition. Both groups are Muslims and live in shabby working-class neighborhoods where they compete for jobs.
