College Basketball : Cuesta Tops Moorpark, 65-64, as Bussey Hits, Then Misses

Guard David Bussey made a 40-foot three-point shot with 21 seconds to play to pull Moorpark to within one point, but his 50-foot shot at the buzzer missed and Cuesta won the Western State Conference game, 65-64, Thursday night at Cuesta.
Cuesta led, 43-30, with 15 minutes to play when Moorpark went on a 15-2 run and tied the score, 45-45, on Todd Johnson’s three-point shot with five minutes to go. Cuesta held leads of two to five points until Bussey’s shot.
Moorpark (14-10, 4-5 in conference play) missed all six of its free throws in the first half and made only 9 of 18 in the game.
Cuesta was 14 of 19 from the free-throw line. Cuesta made 23 of 39 field-goal attempts, and Moorpark made 24 of 51.
Sophomore guard Darrin Shaw had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Cuesta (2-7 in conference play).
WOMEN
Cal Lutheran 70, The Master’s 64--Heidi Griffith scored 20 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to key the Regals’ come-from-behind victory in the NAIA District III game at Cal Lutheran.
Master’s (10-10) held a 35-26 halftime lead behind the shooting of Shelmarie Tatum, who finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Mustangs, however, could not maintain their pace in the second half, and Cal Lutheran outscored them by 15.
Rachel Boba scored 14 points and Danielle Elton added 10 for Cal Lutheran (4-14).
Kim Vargas (12 points), Michelle Spink (12) and Deanna Mincks (11) gave Master’s balanced scoring.
Moorpark 69, Cuesta 63--Michele Brown scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Monarchs to a Western State Conference victory at Moorpark.
Moorpark (17-10, 9-0) holds a two-game lead over Bakersfield in the conference race with three games left.
