Westside : Bill to Cut Class Sizes Proposed

State Sen. Gary K. Hart (D-Santa Barbara) has introduced a bill to create a program aimed at reducing class sizes in high schools.
The program, outlined in SB 1843, would allow a school district to apply for a $200,000 state grant to reduce class sizes in English, math, science or social studies at one of its high schools. Up to 10 schools would be allowed to participate in the program, which is designed to test whether students and teachers benefit from reduced class size.
Hart said California rates second in class size average in the nation. In 1986, the average class size in the state was 30.2 students. The bill is expected to be heard in the Senate Education Committee next month.
