Oil Workers Strike Mobil in Torrance

Hundreds of oil refinery workers went on strike at a Mobil Oil Corp. facility in Torrance late Wednesday night, union officials said.
More than a dozen pickets emerged at the Torrance refinery at 10 p.m., complaining that the company was attempting to exclude certain classes of workers from its contract.
“Mobil made their offer contingent on ripping jobs out of the collective bargaining agreement,” said Steve Sullivan, a spokesman for Local 1-547 of the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers International Union, which represents about 450 workers at the Torrance facility.
A plant security officer said a strike was under way and that the plant was being run by management personnel. Spokesmen for New York-based Mobil could not be reached for comment.
