Two men were arrested Wednesday after a deputy spotted a pipe bomb in a car that had been stopped for speeding near Calabasas, authorities reported.
Jeffrey Lucas, 24, of Bakersfield and Kurt Ruettgers, 24, of Wasco were arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive device at 10 a.m. on Las Virgenes Road, just south of the Ventura Freeway, said Deputy Bill Wehner. The two men were being held at the sheriff’s Malibu substation jail in lieu of $60,000 bail each, Wehner said.
After the deputy spotted the pipe bomb in the back of the car, the arson and bomb squad was called to dismantle the device.
“They determined that is was an actual bomb and they were able to successfully dismantle it,” Wehner said.
Wehner said investigators had not determined why the two men had the device.
