Crowd Welcomes Home the Redskins

HERNDON, Va. — About 2,000 fans hailed the return of the Redskins to the Washington area Monday night, capping 24 hours of nearly continuous celebration of the team’s 42-10 Super Bowl victory Sunday over the Denver Broncos.

Monday was anything but a typical day in the nation’s capital, as city officials started planning a victory parade for Wednesday, Redskin banners fluttered from downtown office buildings, and President Reagan invited the club to the White House.

“To see that kind of a crowd out there, it really means a lot to our players,” Coach Joe Gibbs told the crowd outside Redskins Park.

After the game ended Sunday night, more than 100,000 fans streamed into the Georgetown section of the city, forcing police to close down large stretches of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street.

Twenty people were arrested during the celebration.
