U.N. Resolution Accusing Israel Vetoed by U.S.

UNITED NATIONS — The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution Monday that accused Israel of violating the human rights of Palestinians in Israeli-occupied territories and demanded that the violations stop.
The vote was 14-1.
The vetoed resolution also called on Israel to offer the Palestinians the protection of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which includes a ban against deportations, and called for the Arab-Israeli conflict to be settled under U.N. auspices.
U.S. Ambassador Herbert S. Okun called the measure an “unhelpful initiative” that would detract from diplomatic efforts now under way.
