HALLANDALE, Fla. — Tappiano outran Cadillacing by a length for an upset victory in the $87,350 Shirley Jones Handicap for fillies and mares Sunday at Gulfstream.
Bound edged Funistrada, the 5-2 favorite, for third in a field of 13 that raced seven furlongs.
Tappiano, ridden by Jean Cruguet, was timed in 1:23 and paid $22.40, $9 and $6.60. Cadillacing paid $6.20 and $5. Bound paid $4.80 to show.
Tappiano moved to the front near the far turn. Cadillacing then rallied on the outside. Cadillacing moved alongside Tappiano at the three-sixteenths pole, but the latter pulled away after the eighth pole and maintained a clear edge to the wire.
Bred and owned by the Frances Genter Stable, Tappiano is a Florida-bred 4-year-old daughter of Fappiano. She won 3 of 11 starts and earned $146,350 last year.
