3 House Members Visiting Nicaragua Back Aid to Contras

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Three of four U.S. House members visiting Nicaragua said Sunday they have solidified their commitment to vote for aid to the Contras fighting to overthrow the leftist government here.
“I feel much stronger about it,” said Rep. Mickey Edwards (R-Okla.), one of the sponsors of the measure to grant $36.25 million to the Contras. “I’m very committed not to abandon these people.”
A House vote on President Reagan’s request for the funding, which would include $3.6 million for ammunition and surface-to-air missiles, is scheduled for Wednesday.
Reps. Richard Ray (D-Ga.) and Curt Weldon (R-Pa.) also said they will vote for the funding. Rep. Beverly B. Byron (D-Md.), who voted in favor of the $100-million aid package in June, 1986, refused to say how she will vote this week.
