Arctic cold crept into the northern plains, slashing daytime temperatures to single digits and chasing a welcomed thaw that had pushed readings well into the 50s. The surge of Canadian cold air dropped temperatures below zero across northern Montana, North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. Strong northerly winds produced a windchill factor of 52 below zero at Dickinson and Minot, N.D., the National Weather Service said.
